Safe Water for Cambodian Families

Clean water is an absolutely essential resource for humanity— but in Cambodia, many rural communities are struggling to access safe water. Unclean water is causing severe illness and leading to issues like malnutrition in young children and a high number of infant deaths.

As one of the poorest nations in south-east Asia, many Cambodians are living in poverty and without access to basics like clean water and toilets.

Roughly 20% of the population still relies on damaged or unclean water sources for drinking water, and this number is even higher in remote areas of the country. Often, families are using shallow, hand-dug wells that are easily contaminated.

Samaritan’s Purse is working in a remote district in Cambodia where more than two thirds of households use water from unsafe sources like ponds, lakes, and rivers.

With your support, this project can provide BioSand water filters for 1,800 families, transforming the lives of over 8,000 people, and working alongside local pastors to share about Jesus, the source of Living Water.

BIOSAND WATER FILTERS

BioSand water filters are a brilliant way to bring families access to clean water, even in hard-to-reach places. They are able to work without the need for a power supply and can be built anywhere – many even last for over 25 years.

Each filter costs around £75 and is built in the community, by the community, using locally sourced materials. So far, Samaritan’s Purse has helped over 1 million Cambodians access clean water with these BioSand filters.

At a rate of one litre per minute, biosand filters can provide a family with sufficient water for their daily drinking, cooking, cleaning, and hygiene needs.

Using the same techniques found in nature, BioSand filters remove water-borne bacteria, viruses, and other harmful organisms, providing households a simple way to filter unsafe water and provide for their daily needs. Click here to learn more about how a BioSand filter works.

Your partnership with our Water for Families project will help provide biosand water filters for Cambodian families, enabling them to safely use water from existing sources that will save lives, improve health, and generate positive economic impacts.
