SHOEBOX JOY IN ROMANIA

OUR LOCAL PARTNERS SHARED:

10 year old Larisa was delighted to receive a shoebox gift at an outreach event in Romania. After the event, she was given the opportunity to attend The Greatest Journey Bible discovery programme at a local church. Larisa enjoyed the sessions and decided to make a commitment to follow Jesus.

Once she graduated from the classes, she received a New Testament Bible and was keen to share what she had learned with others. One day Larisa asked her school teacher to make an announcement and proceeded to invite her entire class to her church’s next The Greatest Journey course. Wonderfully, 11 children from her class came along and kept coming. They finished the course and now regularly attend her church.

What’s more, Larisa prayed for her family and the Lord brought first her mother, then her sister and then her father to church. Now, they are baptized members of the Alexandria church.

OTILIA’S STORY:

Otilia received an Operation Christmas Child shoebox as a child while living in Romania and now lives in the UK.

Otilia holding the hat she received in her shoeboxShe said, “I remember the great joy that I had when I received my shoebox. It was amazing seeing all that joy, all the smiles, and all the enthusiastic children that could hardly wait for their turn to get a shoebox. I remember all the items in my shoebox. At that time in Romania we only had a very limited choice of products manufactured in the Soviet Union, so it seemed like all the items in the shoeboxes were the best I had ever seen, the colouring pencils produced the best colours, the toys were the most exciting and the hat and gloves were the warmest I’d ever had. The special item inside my shoebox was the hat. I loved it so much. So much so that I still have it today, 20 years later. Receiving a gift at Christmas was amazing. We did not usually receive gifts at Christmas. Sometime my dad would have received fruit and sweets from his employer and this would have been given to me and my sisters as our Christmas gift. The memory of receiving an Operation Christmas Child shoebox made that Christmas extra special and has remained with me throughout my life.” Read more

 National Leadership Teams

Operation Christmas Child invests in building National Leadership Teams made up of trained local volunteers and staff within over 100 countries. These teams then work alongside many Regional Leadership teams who in turn train local church leaders and teachers. In Romania 42 teams are working with 1,105 ministry partners (teams of volunteers in local churches) to make Operation Christmas Child and The Greatest Journey possible each year!

THE GREATEST JOURNEY

Each shoebox gift delivered by Operation Christmas Child is a tangible expression of God’s amazing love.  But a shoebox is just the beginning. After receiving a shoebox gift, children have the opportunity to enrol in The Greatest Journey – 12 fun and interactive Bible lessons, where they get the chance to discover who Jesus is and how to begin their own journey of faith.  At the end of the course they get to experience a graduation ceremony where they receive a New Testament in their own language.

The Greatest Journey is taught by local volunteers who have been trained to deliver the programme.  It is offered free of charge, without obligation and with the consent of the child’s parent or guardian. Over 63,843 children in Romania have enrolled in this programme since it started.

You can be a part of helping us “go and make disciples of all nations” as Jesus commanded.  Sign up for a monthly gift of £5, and each year you will give 12 children study materials, a New Testament, and the opportunity to share their faith with family and friends.

THANK YOU for sharing Good News and Great Joy with children around the world!
